Pre-ground coffee and ESE pods: what works

Pre-ground coffee works in all five machines we list, as long as you use a pressurized (dual wall) basket. ESE pods are a different story. We did not see ESE pod support stated on any of the five listings, so do not buy pods until you have checked the manual for your exact model.

How to get the most from pre-ground
- Use the pressurized basket. In a single wall basket, pre-ground coffee runs fast and thin. See pressurized vs non-pressurized baskets.
- Buy coffee labeled as an espresso grind. Drip grind is too coarse.
- Buy small bags and close them tight. Ground coffee goes stale fast.
- Keep the dose steady. A double is about 18 grams. You cannot change the grind, so dose and shot length are your only levers.
ESE pods
An ESE pod is a single dose of ground coffee pressed into a paper disc. It is a different thing from a plastic or metal capsule. A machine needs a basket shaped for the pod to seal on it. Of our five listings, only the Stilosa's box contents come close. They name a "single and double pod filter", which is not a clear promise of ESE support. The other four listings do not mention pods.
- If pods are the main reason you are buying, confirm in the maker's manual that your model takes ESE pods, and which basket to use.
- If you want pod-level ease with fresh beans, the Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier weighs and grinds the dose for you. Caveat: it is the largest machine here at 31.9 pounds.
- Pods and beans cost different amounts per drink. Type your own numbers into the cost calculator. For a single-dose pod, pick the 9 gram option.
When to move on from pre-ground
