How often to descale an espresso machine
Updated
Follow your machine's manual or its descale light first. As a guide, De'Longhi says to descale its pump espresso machines after about 200 uses, and sooner where the water is hard. At 5 drinks a week, that is about every 40 weeks. At two drinks a day, it is about every 14 weeks.
What 200 uses looks like
| Drinks per week | Weeks between descales |
|---|---|
| 5 | About 40 |
| 10 | About 20 |
| 14 (two a day) | About 14 |
| 21 (three a day) | About 10 |
This counts one use per drink and divides 200 by your weekly number. Steaming milk and hot water also pass water through the heater, so lean toward the early side. With hard water, go earlier still. That figure is De'Longhi's. Other makers set their own schedule, and some machines simply tell you with a light.
Descaling is not cleaning
| Job | What it removes | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe and purge the steam wand | Milk | Every use |
| Rinse the basket and handle, wipe the group head | Coffee oils and grounds | Daily |
| Deeper clean of most parts | Built-up oils | About weekly at two to five cups a day, per Breville |
| Grinder and water tank | Stale grounds, film | Every two to three weeks, per Breville |
| Descale | Mineral scale inside the heater and pipes | Per the manual or the light |
How to make scale build slower
- Use filtered water if your tap water is hard. The Breville Barista Express includes a water filter. Caveat: filters need replacing, and that is a repeat cost our calculator leaves out.
- Empty and refill the tank often so water does not sit for days.
- Use the descaler the maker names. The Breville Bambino and Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier listings include descaling powder in the box. Caveat: that is one dose, so note the product name before you run out.
- Owners of the De'Longhi Stilosa can use the 200 use figure directly, since it comes from the same maker. Caveat: check the Stilosa manual for the exact steps.
Why it matters
Scale slowly narrows the water path. Shots run slower, steam gets weak, and in the end the machine can stop. Every machine on our roundup has some owner reports of early failure. We cannot know how many were scale, but it is the one cause you control.
Descaling solution is an acid. Follow the maker's steps, rinse as many times as the manual says, and keep the solution away from children. Upkeep is one of the costs our cost calculator leaves out.
